Polished Dimes ..
Have to say that this lyric caught my attention .. not only because of its unusual visualization, but also because I'd seen it somewhere before. Turns out it was in the 2000 novel "Have You Seen Me" .. by Laura Denham. One of the characters is described as having eyes like "two polished dimes with a drop of India Ink in the middle.."
Just seems like such an unusual description for eyes .. like two polished dimes. So specifically descriptive and out of the ordinary. Makes you wonder if Avett ever happened upon that book ..

This is an interesting theory.
Yeah, she writes about a characters saying that his eyes:
"appeared to be silver .. it probably said "gray" on his driver's license. But gray didn't do justice to their metallic sting. Two polished dimes dotted in the middle with a single drop of Indian Ink. Aluminum with tiny holes cut into the center. Like sterling planets. Mercury. Stephen's eyes were a bad poet's day out."
Hard to imagine any two people coming up with polished dimes for eyes independent of the other, but anything is possible.
Book title "Have You Seen Me" potentially a link to Bella Donna? ("Bella Donna have you seen me...have you ever really seen me?")
