Timothy Seth Avett as Darling

Timothy Seth Avett as Darling

So I just dropped $30.00 and downloaded 'em all on iTunes lol Seeking them via the toob has been okay for months, but insufficient. I'm glad I bought them...so many jewels I didn't even know existed. And I really like the slightly faster Bella Donna (not as much as the slower...but I like having another version.)

Man, I have no other artists who require an iPod of their own to hold the library.

I LOVE it.

So my question:

What are your TOP 3 "Seth as Darling" songs?

Replies for this Board Topic

Top 3, that's tough

In Your Light
Awaiting The Flood
The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell

I recently played "The Mourning, the Silver, the Bell" in my room and pondered : If you completely nail it in your bedroom and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?o

Hard to choose, but I think mine are:

1. About Love
2. In Your Light
3. For All the Times

And blasto, I bet it makes a great sound Smiling

--
I just want my life to be true
Just want my heart to be true

blasto, that was funny! As with all of their songs, I can have "today's favorites."

Mine are:

1. In your light
2. Awaiting the Flood
3. The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell

That's just because I'm most familiar with them. Although I enjoy Sonata a LOT, too.

"Free is not your right to choose.
It's answering what's asked of you.
To give the love you find until it's gone."
(and they do!!!!)

Heaven's Windowsill
Ballad in Open D
Carolyn Sells

--
"Pull back the curtains, let your poverty shine. Take off your shoes and have a glass of wine." -- The Ragbirds

Heaven's Windowsill
Awaiting the Flood
Forgiving Me

This is tricky. I keep going back and forth between Forgiving Me and In Your Light. And then there's Be On My Side. I'm afraid I am failing miserably at choosing a top three!

I love how these Darling songs offer another perspective on TAB songs, you can see the mind of an artist approaching a feeling from different angles. Clearly, Seth was working on something with The Teal Dream & In The Curve. And does anyone else hear Forgiving Me as a companion/precursor to Ballad of Love & Hate, especially that last verse...

So I said I'm no angel. Do you understand?
She said you're the one and that's how it is
And you can't be blamed for the evil that is
And you cannot be troubled with things that have been
And you need not worry for me
My life is what it should be
Just forgiving you

I'm putting off choosing, but for this moment:
Forgiving Me
The First Big
Brakelights, Pt 2 (because it's so different)

I'm pained to not include About Love, Ballad in Open D, and Blessed. And some weeks the Seth & Kitty interlude is my favorite thing in the world. Must. stop. now.

Close your eyes, forget your troubles, you can ride with me and my teal dream

1. The First Big
2. In Your Light
3. Blessed

My favorite Seth solo songs:

Mama and the the future
Blessed
Some bad dream

Galaxie: i love how seth makes a clear relation to Scott and November Blue in Blessed. Hearing that for the first time blew my mind knowing that the "talented young poet" he refers to is his own brother.

katlik, that's so touching, eh?

wishing a very happy birthday to Seth! hope year 30 is amazing for him, can't wait to see what it brings musically. (3rd Gleam, hint hint). it's so fun to be on the ride with them.

Idk if I love the first big because its just a beautiful song. or its ending.
twas watching edward scissorhands today. <3 :3

some bad dream
forgiving me
a fine melody

obviously bella donna is on this list, but since they rereleased it as an avett song i figured i could slip in another darling tune.

1. Sounds of the Season Ending
2. Guilty
3. Awaiting The Flood

I'm not picking 3 favorite Darling songs because that's impossible, but I flew back from England yesterday and listened to the entire Avett Brothers catalog then Delta decided to cancel my flight from New York to Memphis last night. But on the flight home this morning I listened to all of the Darling music and it was sooooo nice

#1 About Love......

#2 Awaiting the Flood
#3 Blessed

It's impossible for me to pick JUST three, so I'll just list the ones that came to mind first:

1 - Awaiting The Flood
2 - Ballad In Open D
3 - In Your Light

1-About Love
2-Be On My Side
3-The Mourning the Silver the Bell

i hope he puts out a new solo album. Each song is filled with such passion

Where can I get this "Darling" album/record? Are there more than one of these "Darling" efforts/works? Is "Darling" a psuedonym or nom de plume or alias or band name? I confess: I am an Avett junkie. The commentary on this suggests it would be a good fix whilst awaiting the new release.

I only have The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell so far but honestly it is harder for me to pick a top 3 from that one than from the Avett Brothers collection. But I guess if I had to it would be:
1. About Love
2. The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell
3. I Don't Care Sincerely (even though it is REALLY painful to listen to)

Can't get enough of it. That man has the most beautiful voice. "In Your Light," "I Don't Care Sincerely," "About Love," "Rain on My Tin Roof," "The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell," "I Can't Remember," "Mama and the Future," "Guilty," "Be on My Side," "Getting Us All"..... the list keeps going. There are very few that I don't like. I can't even try to make a top three! I love Scott too, don't get me wrong, but there's something really special about Seth.

1. Rain On My Tin Roof - A really terrific song. As good as anything in the brothers' catalog.

2. About Love - Same as above...another fantastically realized song, concise and cutting.

3. This Night Here (Something Like Hope) - One more perfect song.

To me, the first three are easy, but it's a very close call for 3.5 (I couldn't put them as far back as 4) with Sounds of the Season Ending and Brakelights: Part 2 Cheap Rum. There are several others that I like quite a bit from the Darling recordings, but I think those five have the hallmarks of the best Seth songs. While I like almost all of his acoustic numbers from Darling and TAB, I think the best are the tightly structured ones with memorable choruses or repeated hooks.
Not sure if that makes sense (to me, even..haha), but I think of some of the other Darling stuff as meandering..even though I like the songs.

No love for Walking The Line? It's one of my favorites. (and it sounds great live)

I love them all even ones some say aren't so great. I love that he is so willing to be open and vulnerable with his emotions and pain. Of course I am awfully partial to Seth. He could sing the phone book or the ingredients on a kitty litter bag and it would be poetry.

I agree 100% Shawna! I've said before the man can make anything beautiful. A yardsale, really? A car wreck? Anything is beautiful coming from him.

Meeting him in person makes everything seem even more true and raw and beautiful. He's just as sincere and compassionate in person as he is in his songs. I was able to connect with him and share personal stories within just a few minutes of talking to him. I just love him.

the teal dream
awaiting the flood
this night here (something like hope)
i don't care sincerely
rain on my tin roof
sound of the season ending

this was top three x's 2, correct? Eye-wink
there's just too many that are so good!

Thanks lostsynapse for the link to the Timothy Seth Avett as Darling site. I just received in the mail today Seth's three solo albums and am playing "To Make The World Quiet" right now and I really enjoy it.

Having first discovered TAB with the album "I and Love and You," I liked Scott's voice best as he sings a lot of the leads there. As soon as I watched "The Ballad Of Love And Hate" though from "Live Vol. 3 , I became a huge Seth fan too. That song helped me go back to "I and Love and You" and better pick out Seth's vocals.

I have always preferred bands with more than one lead vocalist and TAB sure qualify. I eagerly await hearing "Killing The Headlamps" and "the mourning, the silver, the bell."

Does anyone happen to have one of the first copies of any of the albums? i remember reading somewhere (I think on the TSA as Darling website) that Seth sat at his kitchen table with an x-acto knife putting together the first few hundred copies! Would be so cool to get a hold of one.

I have the originals as well as an advance copy of The Morning, The Silver, The Bell. It was also a hand made item. The Killing The Headlamps CD is the most impressive package. It has a few nice lyric insert sheets too. Did the repressing contain the inserts?

These other early CDs appear to have home made covers. NEMO’s second CD, simply titled NEMO (Scott told me it had several different cover designs), The Avett Brothers Vol.1, Country Was, and Live at the Double Door. There is also a very minor mistake on the inside cover of Mignonette’s first pressing that was subsequently corrected.

David,
You should pick up the re-pressings. They are very well put together, particularly Killing the Headlamps. Lyrics were included in a booklet, but the disc came in a really nice sleeve with artwork from Seth. They also have been touched up by Doug and sound much better than the originals did.

I know, I do need to get the repressings. I had a talk with Doug a few weeks ago and he went into detail about everything he did to improve the sound. It was quite labor intensive.

Post pictures of Seth;s original copies!

Well, you asked so here it is (yet again)

On line 6 you can see all three as well as the advance copy Seth sent me a few weeks before its release. If you view it full size you can have a better look. The Killing the Headlamps has a sort of window cut out and the photo shows through it. I believe the re-releases look pretty much the same but may be digipacks. The original are all in plastic jewel cases.

thank you thank you thank you!

David,
The re-releases of the first 2 are in fact digipacks. The "window" concept on Kicking The Headlamps remains intact, however.

I absolutely love all of the Darling recordings. I would be happy as a junebug if Seth recorded more. I drive my co-worker crazy with Darling. It is my favorite thing to work to, and will repeat them over and over.
My top 3 faves:
I don't care sincerely
Guilty
the mourning, the silver, and the bell

but almost equally love so many others:
awaiting the flood
blessing
teal dream
sound of the season ending
rain on my tin roof
about love
ballad in open D

I just love him <3

Shawna, I nearly spit out my water!

Mostyounglove- I totally agree. I became even more of a Team Seth girl when I met him. He is so incredibly genuine and so sweet. On one occassion, I was speaking to him and a security guy was moving barricades around and hit me in the leg pretty hard with it. Seth reached out with so much concern, grabbing my arm and putting his arm around my back, making sure I was ok. I was so touched by his concern. It really wasn't that big of a deal, but just the fact that he cared, really shows what kind of man he is.

The copy I have of To Make the World Quiet is a jewel case. I love the layout of all of them. I wish I had originals. I just love the idea of Seth's labor of love putting them together. To add to a lot of these lists, I completely adore Rapture and Smoke. "I won't be young for long, but I'm glad I was young once with you."

Well ya know me, kindermama, I don't hide my Seth addiction, and Crackerfarm is my enabler.

Shawna, you speak the truth hon- we all do a fair bit of wearing our hearts on our sleeves. You and CF slay me Eye-wink

These albums are circulating in between everything else, always! Probably my favorite collection of albums. I hope there will be more one day.

Wow. Thanks for turning me on to these amazing songs. Wow.

does anyone know the chords to the song "blessed"?

1. The Mourning, the Silver, the Bell
2. Guilty
3. The Teal Dream
