This part of Ballad in Open D from the Mourning, the Silver, the Bell (Timothy Seth Avett as Darling) always makes me smile when I hear it.
Well there might be something
she wants for me to give her
Lord, there might be something
she wants for me to give her
Like maybe some clothes or jewlery that she left here
Well I'd give her things back gladly,
but I can't cause I threw them in a river
I'm a bartender, and when I'm having a bad day or someone is giving me a hard time,
as hard on yourself.
please pardon yourself
do the best you can
that won't go unseen
Does the trick every time
As for my darling beautiful husband whom I love with all my heart, he's
the back and forth sway of the hammock all day
That is the best line ever to say that you love someone!
"There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out"
I think its one of the best because I think its about living the life without letting
everyone else dictate the rules.
^^ I've always thought that line was both incredibly romantic and incredibly mean at the same time. Great for "Offering" girl, terrible for the "others."
"When at first I learned to speak, I used all my words to fight, with him and her and you and me. But it's just a waste of time. Yeah, it's such a waste of time."
"if you're loved by someone you're never rejected. Decide what to be and go be it."
Head down don't you make a sound
Keep your plans all to yourself
They'll come true they follow you
They're what you're obligated to
Thank you. All of these quotes are amazing. I think my favorite has to be:
"Well life is ever changing
but I will always find a constant
and comfort in your love
With your heart my soul is bound
And as we dance I know
that heaven will be found"
chilixx,
Sanguine is also one of my go-to songs when I need a boost. The other is Please Pardon Yourself.
Neither song actually reassures you that everything is going to work out perfectly. Too Pollyanna-ish for me, anyway.
What they both do, though, is provide a helping hand and a kick in the keester to get one through hard times.
And it works.
Avett songs do more than entertain.
Sanguine is fabulous but I'm partial to "Dark and lonely is the ride, the devil always by my side." Untitled # 1 also has some great lines and so does Untitled #2 for that matter. Oh, and The Birthday Hangout song Has some great ones too. Die then Grow has awesome lyrics as well.
I'm gonna quote Darling...."I'm not gonna tell a girl how much she ought to love me. You shouldn't have to tell someone, you shouldn't have to tell them what they're missing". Just kills me!
"just do your best
It's the only way to keep that last bit of sanity
maybe i don't have to be good but i can try to be
at least a little better than i've been so far"
"there's a darkness upon that's flooded in life
and i'm frightened by those who don't see it"
"i could go on bout my insecure nature,
i could keep living off sympathies
i could tell all the people that all of my success
is a direct reflection on me
but watching you makes me think that that is wrong"
"i once heard the worst thing a man could do is draw a hungry crowd,
tell everyone his name, pride, and confidence,
but leaving out his doubts"
I wanna fit in to the perfect space,
feel natural and safe in a volatile place.
And I wanna grow old without the pain,
give my body back to the earth and not complain.

I looked ahead to the open road, thought about the people and what they know,
And wrote a book called "People Don't Know Nothin".
No matter what they tell ya, man!
I was just getting ready to post a similar question & found this thread- so maybe y'all can help me brainstorm a bit. I want to put some Avett lyrics in my soon to be born baby's "nook" where he will sleep as decor and needed some suggestions for good quotes/lines from Avett songs. Any suggestions that might be good for baby boy? {Already have "always remember there is nothing worth sharing....} which I did for hubs on our anniversary
Thanks for any help!
"With lucifer beneath you and God above, if either one of 'em asks you what your living of, say love."
"Alot of drinkin' here, and drinkin' there, I'll play and sing about any-damn-where, alot of thinkin' about where I'm goin' next."
"Because we had to, because I loved you, because the damned alchohol."
"I wanna have pride like my mother has, and not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad."

The beginning of At the Beach always warms my soul:
"I know that you're smilin, baby
I don't even need to see your face
Sunset at the shoreline, we are laughing, breaking up,
Just like the waves"
All-time feel good tune, always cheers me up.
"I've been drinking seven hours now, sympathy is a waste of my high!"
"Always remember there is nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name."
@athensac - that was the first line I thought of, love that one

gretchenb, if I had to narrow it down to one that'd probably be it.
My favorite is" don't say it's over that's the worse news i could here i swear that i would"
"If I live the life I'm given, I won't be scared to die"
Good one knucklehead! I also love, "I gave to you my ugly brown coat...you made it pretty when you put it on"
PGfromMatthews- Yes! Those lines get me every single time.

Love Scott's comment about not being able to throw a certain coat away.
"I will keep my wits about myself, disregard directions sent from hell"
Ann, that's one of my favorites, along with "kill the doubt that strangles my self-worth." Sanguine is one that I go to if I need a boost.
Me too Mander...one of my all time fav songs! @AnnapolisAnn - love that too!!
Here's the verse they had the crowd sing when i saw em last:
"But if love is a game, girl, then you’re gonna win
I’ll spend the rest of my life bringing victory in
If you want me to"
instant goosebumps!
"When at first I learned to speak, I used all my words to fight, with him and her and you and me. But it's just a waste of time. Yeah, it's such a waste of time."

Avett songs do more than entertain.
So if ever someone says to you / "Life isn't fair, get used to it" / Then you should say / "Well it might be / If folks like you would let it be"
I was just listening to Matrimony and wanted to add:
I ain't through I ain't walking out
Leaving ain't what I'm about,
You may scream and I may shout.
But baby I love you.
"And so it goes a man grows cold
Some would say a man grows strong
They tell me life grows short
I say the road only grows long
And as long as there's a road
My feet will never touch the ground
And if you won't give my heart back I've no need to stick around"
Any of the lines from Tales of Coming News - I just recently discovered that song and it's amazing!

"I remember crying over you, and I don't mean like a couple of tears and I'm blue. I'm talkin' about collapsin' and howlin' at the moon."
I would love to know that someone once had loved me like that.
