They are original, following nobodys trend or sound. I was hooked by (November Blue) the first song I ever heard by the Avett's. Then I listened to Hard Worker, Swept Away, New Love Song, etc.
I didn't quite know how to "label" their music to friends/family. So I just said - I don't care what the hell you call it, just listen. I remember Iron Grass being a popular term at the time, now that seems to have evolved to Punk Folk. I stopped counting how many people I've turned on to the Avett Brothers music, most by taking them to shows - the best way to really experience everything they are about.

You wanna kiss the ground
Leave no sound
Take it up next year
Chalk it up to remember
Wasted lonley fever
The way we've tried
Left a slide into harm's way
Enough concern to ride it out
It's no surprise that it's a long slow fade
