Reviews for this Album

My kids and I love this song because of the raw - and very real - emotion which reveals the insecurity that we all feel at one time or another in our relationships.

My oldest son likes this song so much that he convinced his High School Humanities instructor to learn it on the guitar so he could sing in their yearly talent show called Night of the Arts.

Here is the url to his YouTube video if ya wanna watch.

I hope it never gets old. I listen to it everyday when i get ready for work. Of their albums, imo, this is The Avetts at their best.

Before long i'm sure i'll have all of the words memorized. What an album. 5 stars!

I play all this tracks with my guitar.

This album is great. It's so full of heart, something that can be lack in a lot musicians album, but for you guys it comes right through

The only way this album could have been more appropriately named would be if they'd called it, "This record's gonna make you laugh, cry, love and hate". If I had to use just one word to describe this record it would have to be BEAUTIFUL. Thought provoking and inciteful, one can't help but being drawn into the feelings expressed here. As far as well put together albums go, I'd have to put this one up there with OCMS's Tennessee Pusher and Sun Volt's Trace. Emotionalism is definitely one for the ages.

I'd loved The Avett Brothers for a while but during the summer I fell in love with this. There's not a song on here I don't like. I can't stand this cold weather and nothing takes me back to the wonderful summer like this album does! Those songs got me through some rough days. Nothing makes you feel more free than riding down Mt.Pleasant Road, windows down, listening to this album. I was waiting to pass you guys all summer and I finally did last November! I love you guys and this album!

I am just getting back into vinyl and would really love to have Emotionalism to spin. I have all The Gleam and I & Love & You. Please let me add Emotionalism to that list.

To me, this album embodies the band. Johnny Cash had "Live at Folsom Prison", Elvis had "The Sun Sessions", The Beatles had "Sgt. Pepper's...", Bob Dylan had "Blonde on Blonde", hell, Michael Jackson had "Thriller". Every artist has an album that listeners regard as what the musician(s) set out to do. This album is the Avett Brothers' masterpiece.

Every song is a work of genius, but here are my personal favorites:

- "Paranoia in Bb Major" - The tale of being out of place in your own life is so disturbing and painful that my heart sinks when I first listen. But, in the end the Avett's assure us that someone out there will save us. "If love is a game, girl, then you're gonna win...I'll spend the rest of my life bringing victory in" is my favorite twenty words in music.

- "The Weight Of Lies" - For liars, this song is a bore. For anyone who hates to lie, and has regets, this song is an inspiration. The thought of telling lies to all the people you know, but being honest to the one you love is such a twisted notion that it almost seems dirty to write a song about it. Never were words were spoken so true than when the Avett's cry "Lies don't need an aeroplane to chase you down".

- "The Ballad Of Love And Hate" - This song is so simple and plain that love seems like an afterthought until you hear "her" say "you're mine and that's it, forever". Greed, hate, loneliness, and forgiveness are all meshed into one story about any two people on this Earth. This is a display of songwriting that is unrivaled in today's music.

- "I Would Be Sad" - This song is the proverbial Bloody Mary of a broken heart. Simply put, if she doesn't love you be sad, but not for long. It's a great way to explain and resolve the thought that love is mostly fleeting.

I could go on for days about every song on this album and why it is important in my life, but that'd take a book to write down. In short, this album is the most important album in the Avett's arsenal and emotion has never been sung so sweetly.

Thanks

agree with all

I love these guys, and this is definitely my favorite album to listen to...well atleast I think...oh man I can't decide! Laughing out loud

No No, it is really this album. "Die Die Die", "Shame" and "The weight of lies" I could listen to these on repeat. Such energy but yet such heart in all those words.

"I have a home in Carolina, Not far from the city lights, But we can see the stars at night baby.. baby"

My favorite album by TAB. One minute your rocking your face off and the next it can put you to sleep with their sweet lovely tunes! Great!!!!

I hate to admit that this album was the first taste of The Avett Brothers that I had. Since then I have listened to all of the albums they have created. When I first heard this album I was going through a pretty nasty break-up. This music helped me through the hard times and the other albums reinforced my love for these guys and the music they make.

An all around great release, no bad song, you could place it on the shelf with the beatles and the band

8 songs 8 dollars, deal of the century..... We use that joke at every show by the way.

Bottom line is this album has a few spots that I like but don't love, but songs like “Shame”, and “I would be Sad” are worth their weight in gold. I often get left at the gate with artists whose lyrics are so poetic and deep that an idiot like me can’t understand the them, but these guys write songs that are plain spoken. Without a doubt this is one of my favorite ten albums of the past ten years. I am a believer that I will be a fan for a long time to come.

I know I've commented on this album before, but I feel like I need to comment on it again.
I discovered the Avett Brothers pretty recently, only this past summer, and this is the album that I was first introduced to. So whenever I listen to a song off this album, I immediatley think of the summertime. Even on the coldest days of December, I can pop in this cd, close my eyes and think of the times when I'm barefoot and laying out in the hot sun. Emotionalism is pretty much the epitome of amazing, I must say.
And it's pretty great when I am hanging out with my best friend, and one word can trigger our Avetty brains to start singing a song. And the songs are usually of this album, because it is so freaking fantastic!

I've been listening to your music for a long time - since hearing you at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville, opening for Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks. But this album grabbed my wife, son, and my daughter as well. As soon as I heard "..boatloads of shame" in the song "Shame" I knew it would grab my kids. When you played live, I even got my other son - a rap and metal fan - to like your music. And "Emotionalism" is what did it. "Mignonette" sucked in two of us, but "Emotionalism" got the other three.

would love for your band to put them to music or at least review them and see if your interested. Titles included. Ties That Bind/ a poem about discrimination. Stand Tall/ a song about love and Pride. please contact me. Deb

I bought this album, in the summer of 2008, soon after I saw them for the first time. Little did I know that when I bought this album, this would become my summer of 2008 album. Whenever I think about graduation, Bonnaroo music festival, or beginning college, this is the album that I play in my head over and over again. Each song has its own importance to that summer that I will never forget. It was the best summer of my life represented by this album.

Love this one. It's hard to claim a favorite, but i saw Seth play 'Ballad of Love and Hate' live and it was amazing! Also love the bonus track of In 'The Curve'. Love the entire thing.

but it sure speaks to me. Ive never heard lyrics some up feelings as complete as these. Sometimes its the weight of truths that chase you down.

I guess the timing of the release of emotionalism and what my life had become coincide. I was fortunate enough to see several live shows during the touring phase of the album and instantly became...well...obsessed with the avetts. I'd listened to and loved them for several years by this time but emotionalism sealed the deal. I realized that no music, nothing written or sung or played, had ever affected me as the avetts were able to with ease. Die, Die, Die and Shame are stand outs. Shame tells the story of how I feel about a lost love that I'll forever consider "the one who got away." How could people i've never even met speak so clearly for me? One of life's great mysteries i guess.

Best CD that they have created.

But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

The first time I listened to this ong I did not care for it. I thought it was too slow. After that I found myself passing it by on the CD, but now I can't get enough of it. Don't overlok this song like I did!

Great banjo song. I find myself singing this song all the time. I will just blurt lines from this song randomly throughout the day for no real good reason!

Good song and easy to play. Such a long song, but a good one none the less. Seth is awesome when he plays this one live. And the guys shouting in the audience shoot have been shot during this performance in Iowa City!

This song kicks butt! No only is it a great song, but the video of them in the back of the bus is awesome. I wish I could play half as good as they do! Even cramed in the back of that bus they rock!
